This year, six new organic farming interns are learning about community-supported agriculture and direct-marketing strategies. With 60 CSA subscriptions from all around Whidbey Island, the new trainees have been growing more than 70 different varieties of vegetables including varied beans, salad greens, squash, oriental veggies, broccoli, tomatoes, carrots, kohlrabi, fennel, herbs, and more.

    Maha Farm and Forest enhances the South Whidbey environment by growing farm and forest products with environmentally positive practices that produce a sustainable harvest. We share resources and experiences with our communities. We grow a wide variety of vegetables, fruits and flowers on a few acres. The rest of the land forms a forest managed to foster a diverse ecosystem of native plants and animals, including sustaining and enhancing existing wetlands. We grow and harvest forest products in a low impact, sustainable way. Trails provide access to the different ecosystems for education and recreation. Programs and curriculum for studying sustainable farming or forest ecosystems are available for educators and the general public.

    The critically endangered Poitou donkeys are helping Maryon Attwood and her small organic family farm develop historic products. The shaggy-haired Poitou donkey, originally from France, is a draft animal used in farming areas to pull equipment and breed mules (a donkey/horse combination). Since 2005, in addition to a breeding program, the Institute has been integrating the use of their donkeys to farm 10 acres of mixed produce and developing donkey-milk creams and body lotion. Tours of the farm and on-site pottery studio are available by appointment.

    Currently operated by fourth-generation Ebey's Prairie native Georgie Smith, the farm produces naturally grown row crops for the local fresh market. These include gourmet garlic and potatoes, mixed greens, fresh shell and dry beans, onions, shallots, cabbage, broccoli, winter squashes, pumpkins and more. Also available are small–seeded cover crop fava bean seed which are considered winter hardy to at least 10 degrees, fix large amounts of nitrogen, and provide a lot of biomass to the soil when tilled in. Great for farms and gardens.
